Finasteride

Finasteride is a popular anti-androgen medication manufactured by Merck most commonly known as either Proscar or Propecia. Based on the progesterone skeleton, Finasteride belongs to a class of medications known as 5alpha-reductase inhibitors and as such is used for the treatment revolving around type 2 5-AR based occurrences. The 5-AR enzyme is the enzyme responsible for converting Testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone or as it’s more commonly known DHT. This is important for performance enhancers as DHT based anabolic steroids have specific side-effects that may occur that can largely be remedied with the use of a 5-AR inhibitor such as Finasteride.

As a type 2 5-AR inhibitor Finasteride was designed for the purpose of treating hair-loss, prostate enlargement, as well as prostate cancer. It is a well-accepted truth, DHT is by-in-large responsible for such conditions when they exist and as a supplementing individual of many anabolic substances the risk of occurrences readily increase; yes, some will be more sensitive than others.

Finasteride is very common among those who supplement with anabolic steroids yet fear hair-loss but there are important things you need to understand before you consider Finasteride use. As an androgen suppressor Finasteride can seriously inhibit the gains made while on cycle, severely and on that basis it is not highly recommended for on-cycle hair preservation. Understand the truth, anabolic steroids, especially those of a DHT nature can lead to hair-loss but the truth is simple, you were going to go bald anyway; the anabolic steroids simply sped the process up. Further and more importantly in the grand scheme, Finasteride has a negative function on the reproductive system. As you understand androgens are essential to this process and function and as an androgen suppressor Finasteride inhibits it to a large degree.

While hair-loss prevention is not a highly recommended means of use for most anabolic steroid users, if you have a family history of prostate issues a regular dosing of Finasteride therapy may be in the cards. However, if you have existing prostate issues you shouldn’t be using anabolic steroids; hopefully this is understood. Nevertheless many will be so concerned with hair-loss that Finasteride will be used for this purpose and it will do a fairly decent job. Through supplementation total DHT in the body can be reduced by as much as 65% and that will be in most cases enough to stave off any hair-loss while on cycle but don’t expect to gain a massive amount of size when Finasteride is conjoined with your anabolic steroid use.
